The MRCS is a single qualification earned across two distinct exams. Part A is a machine-marked written paper that tests whether you hold the scientific and clinical foundation a surgical trainee is expected to carry into theatre. Part B is an OSCE — a circuit of practical, examiner-scored stations that tests whether you can apply that knowledge with real patients and instruments in front of you.
You must pass Part A before attempting Part B. Together they confirm you are ready to take surgical responsibility, and holding the full MRCS is a gateway to higher specialty training across the surgical disciplines.
